from Kathy’s Desk – June 2021

Kinsmen Lodge has experienced some challenges and many triumphs over the last 15 months and we want to acknowledge our staff, Elders, and their families for their support, patience, and understanding during these unprecedented times.  Our hard-working, dedicated, and committed staff have been working additional shifts, longer hours, and even on their days off to address the increased workload and requirements of Licensing, Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), and Enhanced Monitoring.  The entire team is to be commended for their caring attitude and diligence to the ever-changing protocols and audits.  They work without complaint, take very little sick leave, and always maintain a positive attitude.  They are awe-inspiring and amazing!

While we continue to see fewer outbreaks in Long Term Care, the PHO has decreed that some restrictions will remain in place for the time being.  During a recent FHA Town Hall, it was further confirmed that large group activities like Bingo and Happy Hour are still suspended.  Back in November, Dr. Henry compared the pandemic to an Iron Man triathlon race with three different and strenuous legs, explaining that the final leg would only come when the vaccine was available.  Now, that time is here.  Thankfully, the province and the country are seeing a significant decrease in the prevalence of COVID-19 with the administration of the vaccine.  More good news has also come from Premier Horgan’s announcement on May 25th.  Along with everyone else, we watched and listened with anticipation to hear about the BC Restart Plan and look forward to seeing how the rest of the year plays out.

June has always been a busy month for KL, as this is when we undergo our annual financial audit.  This report, as well as updates from the Board and Leadership Team, will be shared during the 45th Annual General Meeting of the Whalley & District Senior Citizens Housing Society to be held on Wednesday, June 23rd at 5:00 PM.  Due to COVID-19 protocols, it will once again be held virtually.  All are invited to attend.  Please RSVP and register your email with our Business Office to ensure you receive the 2021 AGM package and other important information.

KL continues to be involved in QI initiatives.  Our Laundry officially opened on March 1st and everything is going well.  It promotes good infection control practices and staff are happy being onsite and part of the team.  Stay tuned to hear the results of our Patio Beautification Competition.  Everyone has done a fantastic job with transforming the gardens and balconies which are looking very lush.  The Elders hope to grow some produce, herbs, and vegetables that the Cooks will then be able to use in meal prep.

Wishing a Happy Father’s Day to all of our fathers, grandfathers, great grandfathers, foster fathers, step fathers, surrogate fathers, fathers-to-be, and also to all the other men (and women) out there who stand and act as a father figure for their families too!  You are the strength and the solid foundation of our Kinsmen Lodge family!
